Vicky Rathje is a connector. She started In The Know Resources to provide a conduit to help people find tools and resources for personal and professional growth. Her motto is: “do what you do best, and find someone else to do the rest”. She grew up in an entrepreneurial home. Her parents and grandparents owned a hardware store where she spent her early years “dusting the merchandise”. Later her mother and step-father owned a nursing home where she… well, you get the picture. These early experiences encouraged Vicky to get a degree and work in the corproate world where she would have a “job with benefits”. Right out of college Vicky met the love of her life, a Danish accountant who invited her to move to Denmark. She married Jesper and lived there for 4-5 years where she worked in the travel industry with companies like Trans World Airlines and Preferred Hotels. After moving back to the states, Vicky developed a successful career in medical sales, earning a hefty income while on 100% commission. She found this to be the best of both worlds, the support of a corporation with various “departments” that provided specialized support, with the freedom to run her sales territory like her own business. In 2001, Vicky and Jesper bought their dream home, a 20 acres estate on a mountain top, a retreat from their high-stress jobs. While shopping for carpet for their new home, a roll fell from an overhead rack striking Vicky on the head. Thankfully, it was a “mild” brain injury. Her doctors said it was going to take time to heal. Vicky thought 2 months, the doctors said 2 years… her medical sales career was over. Patience isn’t one of Vicky’s virtues, so she decided to create a business that would grow as her brain healed. She became an organic lavender grower. She explored various ways to incorporate the fragrant herb into products. She developed aromatic comfort products and sold them through her business, Aromas for Living. Through her healing process, Vicky became more aware of her inner desire to make the world a better place. She created the Day of Renewal, an annual event to support the Breast Cancer Fund, but also a time for women to renew their commitment to their own health. Vicky dabbled in the gift industry, the floral industry before deciding to jump into the promotional products industry. After spending a year in development, she was set to launch her business “Scentsory Branding” in January 2008. October 2007, wildfires sparked by utility lines burned her lavender fields. Her lavender business went up in smoke… really nice smelling smoke. Back to the drawing board… Vicky loved the freedom of developing and running her business, but felt isolted. She longed to have a team to discuss ideas. She often felt defeated when tackling aspects of the business that were outside her areas of strength. In The Know Resources was born to create a community for small business owners to find tools, resources and connections. Information technology has fundamentally shifted the way businesses operate. This shift has provided tremendous opportunities, but also challenges. Many being “down-sized” out of their corporate jobs will become entrepreneurs out of necessity, many students graduating from universities won’t have the opportunity to find employment through traditional channels. In The Know provides a conduit for businesses to tap into the amazing resources available in their community. In The Know Resources helps people make connections, build community and create growth.
